April 19, 2017 – INSYS introduced the icom Data Suite software package for data point networking and processing.

Professional MRX and MRO series routers (Smart Devices) equipped with the icom SmartBox, an integrated Linux environment, can draw on these functions for edge computing applications. With no special programming skills at all, these enable users to create protocol- and vendor-independent software-based applications.

The basic "starter package" version of the icom Data Suite contains all functions for monitoring, visualisation and messaging. It can be enhanced through extra functions such as Modbus communication capability, Cumulocity or Telekom Cloud der Dinge connectivity, add-ons like MQTT, or an expansion to collect more data points – even while the system keeps running. Widely used controls systems like the Siemens S7 are integrated by means of so-called Application Connectors. Data can also be transferred to IT infrastructures, SCADA and ERP systems or other cloud services, individual Destination Connectors or MQTT. Notably, this IoT protocol also supports application control (subscribe) and the transmission of current values (publish).

In addition, notifications can be alternatively transmitted via text messages, e-mails or HTTP.

As a multi-protocol environment, the icom Data Suite is not just an open system for numerous edge computing functions, but also turns routers into IoT gateways or Smart Devices. For instance, data points can be locally processed arithmetically or with standard logic functions, cached in flags, and monitored by the event/action handler. Collected data is clearly visualised directly on a router dashboard or in a cloud service. The latter provides further functions such as logging or reporting. In addition to data collection and processing, the icom Data Suite opens up even more possibilities.

Applications can be manually or automatically remote-controlled using text messages, MQTT, Cumulocity Cloud or Telekom Cloud der Dinge. The suite allows for adding extra software components as well as adding extra data points at any time. Its built-in web interface makes configuration and administration tasks simple.

For instance, users can be assigned specific roles with different privileges (e. g. access rights).
