GLOBAL PETROLEUM SHOW & CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL PETROLEUM CONFERENCE 2004, CALGARY, ALBERTA (June 8, 2004) - Microwave Data Systems (MDS), a world leader in industrial, wireless, networking solutions with applications in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), automation, public safety, telecommunications, and online transactional markets, today announced that an independent study ranked the company third overall in the worldwide market for wireless Ethernet infrastructure products and network software for use in industrial settings. Massachusetts-based Venture Development Corporation (VDC) recently released the top-level findings of their multi-client market study, which covered various wireline and wireless products.
The study provides market sizes, segmentations and forecasts for these products. MDS also ranked third among networking component suppliers. "MDS' wireless Ethernet infrastructure product line is among the company's fastest growing offerings," noted VDC Group Manager Jim Taylor, who directed the study. "The firm is seen to have particular strength in gateway services, security features and embedded software." VDC also found that the perception among competitors is that MDS has strong marketing/advertising programs in which it sells the benefits of wireless technology without overstating technical aspects, which tend to confuse customers.
According to the study, the largest consuming markets for industrial wireless products are oil and gas, water/wastewater utilities, electric power, oil refining and petrochemical, and automotive. VDC's research also indicates the primary motivations for using wireless networking are the need for fixed and mobile applications, flexibility and ease of expansion/relocation, and the ability to provide long distance/remote coverage for the lowest cost of ownership.
