MTS Introduces All-Metal CSP Sensor For Commercial Applications

CARY, N.C. (September 23, 2003) — MTS Sensors, the leader in magnetostrictive position and level sensors, introduces a new model to its CSP family of commercial linear position sensors. The CSPR, all-metal sensor is IP67 rated for use in rugged commercial and equipment applications where repeatability and accuracy are required in a cost-effective package. “After decades of innovating and perfecting magnetostrictive sensor technology, we have found a way to cost-effectively manufacture accurate, more robust sensors in a smaller package,” said Commercial Products Manager, Jesse Russell.

“This has enabled us to produce CSP all-metal sensors in high-volume, so that they are cost-effective for use in the off-highway machinery, medical care and mobility equipment and other commercial applications, where reliability, accuracy and safety are equally important.”This CSPR version is manufactured with a metal sensor tube for robustness and is shielded to prevent signal interruption. The all-metal model provides custom length electrical “pigtails” instead of connectors so the sensor may be wired directly to the controller. The sensor is manufactured with standard or customizable metal tab plates for easy low-profile installation in machinery. Sensors may measure lengths up to 250mm with no loss in performance.

Standard stroke lengths are 72.3, 109.5, 128.3, 148.0, 162.3, 186.3, 192.3, 194.3, 217.3 and 250.1mm.

Temperature range is -40ºC to +105ºC for the IP67 model. Each sensor provides both analog and PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) outputs. The remote package design results in a smaller overall sensor size with the electronics housed within the cable up to a meter away or, optionally, included within the customer’s controller board to reduce cost further.

In addition to automotive applications, Temposonics’ traditional performance coupled with this low-cost solution allows the high volume product engineer a new position feedback solution suitable for leading edge position control projects such as medical mobility, diagnostic care or treatment devices; marine steering and trim; agricultural and construction equipment articulation control; appliance control; over-the-road mobile equipment applications; and others. Using the same technology found in 25+ years of proven MTS Temposonics industrial position sensors, the Temposonics Commercial Sensor line offers no wear, non-contact reliability and absolute position performance in a form that will fit most space-constrained, cost sensitive applications.

The active diameter of the sensor is under 4.8 mm (0.19 inches). For more information on MTS Sensors Group and Commercial Sensors, please contact: Jesse RussellMTS Sensors Division3001 Sheldon DriveCary, NC 27513. Phone: (919) 677-2314.
