Reliable Controls' Michael Osborne announced as BACnet Chair
BACnet has been an international standard since 2003, and has 877 listed products from 180 manufacturers, with over 1,000 vendor IDs from 50 different countries.

August 21, 2018 – Reliable Controls announced that Michael Osborne, the company’s Firmware Manager, has accepted the appointment of BACnet Chair. Developed under the auspices of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), BACnet is an American national standard, a European standard, a national standard in more than 30 countries, and an ISO global standard. BACnet has been an international standard since 2003, and has 877 listed products from 180 manufacturers, with over 1,000 vendor IDs from 50 different countries.

The purpose of the BACnet standard is to define data communication services and protocols for computer equipment used for monitoring and control of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) and other building systems such as lighting, access control, elevators, and life safety. It also defines an abstract, object-oriented representation of information communication between such equipment, thereby facilitating the application and use of digital control technology in buildings.

The BACnet protocol is supported and maintained by ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee 135. Michael’s appointment as Chair positions him as the Administrator of Standing Standards Project Committee (SSPC) 135, from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021. There is typically a progression of positions from Secretary, to Vice Chair, to Chair—a nine-year commitment in total, with three years in each position. SSPC 135 meets four times per year, where up to 50 people interested in BACnet discuss and drive the ongoing evolution of the standard.

Reliable Controls congratulates Michael on this achievement.
