The original ground-breaking ZiCAM was released in October of 2003, but was only available in B/W with a CMOS sensor. A color CMOS version was released in May, 2004.“Including a CCD version in the ZiCAM family is allowing us to pursue applications that require more demanding image acquisition,” says Mike Kelley, Director of JAI PULNiX’s Smart Products Group. “We’ve solved difficult applications with the CMOS ZiCAM, but having a CCD imager working in conjunction with our ZISC-based Multimedia Recognition Engine (MUREN™) will enable us to solve more of our customers’ problems, and in turn, grow our business,” explains Kelley. ZISC or “Zero Instruction Set Computing” technology and chips were developed by IBM in cooperation with Silicon Recognition Inc.“The improvement in the image by moving to the CCD version was amazing,” states Michael Lerner, Vice President of RFQ Inc. RFQ uses the ZiCAM as a basis for their FlexInspector™ product.
