September 19, 2011 - Ametek introduces Pittman Holding Brakes. Power-off and fail-safe holding brakes are available for integration with Pittman brush-commutated and brushless DC motor products for customized brake/motor packages. All of the brakes are factory-installed to promote reliable, quick and hassle-free startup. Each delivers safe and energy-saving performance. The power-off brakes ideally suit parking brake applications with their capability to decelerate and hold a load in position when power is deactivated.

The holding brakes promote “fail-safe” operation by requiring power for their release. The power-off brakes include Type B30A in four models (supply voltages 12VDC, 19VDC, 24VDC, and 30VDC) and Type B49A in two models (supply voltage 12VDC and 24VDC). Standard features for both types include factory-set precision air gap, rigid molded friction disk, compression springs, and drive nuts with set screw. In addition, the B30A brake integrates MIL-W-22759/34D insulated lead wires and a low-profile mounting plate.

Depending on model, static holding torque from 1 lb-in. (16 oz-in) to 3 lb-in. (48 oz-in) can be achieved. The family of holding brakes includes Types B7, B3, B6, and B5 in NEMA 17, 23, and 34 sizes supplied with 24VDC voltage. A clamp-in collar requires no motor modifications and allows users to simplify stocking by eliminating any need for custom product.

The brakes’ design allows coupling of NEMA output flanges to NEMA gear reducers. The brakes also can be specified with heavy-duty output shaft inputs to meet demanding application needs.
