Banner introduces muting module for safety screens
Muting modules monitor two or four inputs to automatically suspend safeguarding during non-hazardous times in a machine cycle.

Minneapolis, MN - August 3, 2007 - Banner Engineering muting modules are available with 67.5 mm DIN-mounted housing, plug-in terminal blocks and additional features. Banner muting modules monitor two or four inputs to automatically suspend safeguarding during non-hazardous times in a machine cycle. With these compact modules, industrial vehicles, pallets and materials can move into or from a machine process without tripping the primary safeguard system. The DIN-Muting Module offers a simple cabinet-mount for easy installation and is ideal for use with Banner’s family of safety light screen products, such as the EZ-SCREEN, MICRO-SCREEN, MINI-SCREEN and MACHINE-GUARD, or any manufacturer’s devices with hard contacts or solid-state PNP outputs.

The DIN-Muting Module uses diverse redundancy and self-checking to deliver exceptional safety reliability. The module also features bright red, yellow and green LED status indicator lights that deliver constant, ongoing system status information at a glance. In addition, the 2-digit Diagnostic Display provides error codes for easy diagnosis of system malfunctions. These and many more features combine to make the DIN-Muting Module a robust, effective accessory component of virtually any safeguarding system. DIN-Muting Modules are priced as low as $350.

“Safety is a primary concern for manufacturers, and safeguarding system accessories such as our muting modules deliver an easy to integrate safety solution with minimal impact on the production process,” said Mike Carlson, technical manager for Banner’s safety products. “Muting modules streamline operations by letting materials flow into and out of a manufacturing cell, allowing operators to interact more closely with the machine while reducing the risk of injury.” Carlson adds, “In order to provide a more flexible, inexpensive, space-saving solution, these new modules are designed to interface in a Category 2, 3 or 4 circuit and also meet Control Reliability requirements. Plus, they can be used with top-of-the-line Banner safeguarding systems or competitive systems.”

Applications. The Banner DIN-Muting Module is used with safety light screens and other safeguarding devices that are guarding entry/exit points anywhere work-in-progress needs to flow freely into and out of hazardous work cells. Also, in operator load/unload applications, muting allows for increased efficiency and throughput. Its control reliable operation and robust characteristics make the muting module ideal for a wide range of automated machine guarding applications, including pallletizers, stacker/de-stackers, robotic work cells, power presses and manual feed operations. Also, several features of the DIN Muting Module make it particularly easy to set up and use:

  • Monitors safety devices with hard-relay contact or solid-state output
  • Offers choice of two models: safety relay or safety solid-state outputs
  • Offers two reset options: Automatic and Monitored Manual
  • Uses diverse redundancy and self-checking for superior reliability
  • Installs easily inside a control panel
  • Includes Safety Stop Interface (SSI) for connecting supplemental safeguarding devices or E-stops
  • Can be used as a dual-controller light curtain controller if the muting function is not in use
  • Interfaces in a Category 2, 3 or 4 circuit and meets Control Reliability requirements
  • Features status LEDs, operating status indicators and two-digit diagnostic display
  • Includes one non-safety auxiliary output About Banner. Banner Engineering is the world’s leading manufacturer of electronic machine guarding systems, wireless networks, vision sensors, photoelectric and ultrasonic sensors, precision measurement systems, and fiber optic assemblies.
