EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – September 2005 – The BEST (Boosting Science, Engineering and Technology) Robotics Competition officially kicks off this month to begin its 13th annual contest.
The competition challenges elementary and middle school students to design, build and prepare a robot for competition. At kick-off weekends hosted by BEST hub locations nationwide, student teams receive building instructions and a consumable parts kit, which includes various plastic machinery components from igus® Inc., an official sponsor of the BEST Robotics Competition.
The bag of products donated exclusively by igus contains micro Energy Chain®, DryLin® N low-profile linear guide systems, igubal® spherical bearings and DryLin S aluminum shafting.Igus Inc. is the leading developer of Energy Chain cable carriers, Chainflex® continuous-flex cables and iglide® plastic bearings.
Earlier this year, the company launched the Y.E.S. (Young Engineers Support) Program, designed to foster the mechanical design ideas of students, while at the same time educating them on the benefits and merits of plastic components.
The company achieves the program’s objective by donating free product samples to engineering students, curriculums and competitions, such as BEST.With the actual competitions set to begin in October, students are eager to learn the specifics of the game, but are forced to wait. To ensure no team has an upper hand over its competitors, BEST plans to announce the game theme at the end of September, after the last kick-off event has concluded. A small hint is the only piece of information revealed to the students.
This year’s teaser is “Mission to the Humble.”To learn more about the Y.E.S.
