Cooper Bussmann publishes overcurrent protection guide

SPD (Selecting Protective Devices) guide has been updated to the current codes and standards including the NEC 2008 and NFPA 70E 2009 requirements.

March 8, 2009 - The Cooper Bussmann SPD (Selecting Protective Devices) has been newly expanded and updated to the current codes and standards including the NEC 2008 and NFPA 70E 2009 requirements, and is now available online. This educational tool, used throughout the electrical industry, provides application information for overcurrent protection. A valued resource throughout the years, this reference guide has now been expanded with detailed explanations of selective coordination, industrial control panel short-circuit current rating (SCCR) and marking requirements, and electrical safety considerations.The guide illustrates a method to analyze proper industrial control panel SCCR marking with a step-by-step comprehensive example.

The selective coordination section has been expanded to explain NEC requirements, system considerations, tradeoffs in using different overcurrent protective device (OCPD) technologies, and an explanation on why selective coordination is mandatory. A discussion on misconceptions is included. In addition, a new section explains branch circuit overcurrent protective devices and application-limited overcurrent protective devices, such as supplementary overcurrent protective devices, and the proper application of each. "The SPD was developed as an application guide for engineers and electricians. We find that this booklet provides valuable practical overcurrent protection knowledge not typically found in formal education," explained Tim Crnko, manager, training & technical services.

"It has been updated with every revision to the National Electrical Code cycle since 1940."
