DSM Releases SUM-40 Smart Ultrasonic Motor
This compact SUM-40 motor utilizes piezoelectric technology to drive the output and features zero backlash

April 5, 2016 – DSM announces the SUM-40 smart ultrasonic motor. This compact motor utilizes piezoelectric technology to drive the output. The output features zero-power hold at torque levels much greater than the maximum drive torque. This leads to reduced power consumption in applications that require precise positioning. The peak power consumption of the driver is 12 W.

The motor features zero backlash. Coupled with the optical encoder that comes built into the motor, the output is capable of high resolution down to 130 microradians. The motor excels in applications that require precise positioning and high torque, with a max torque of 100 mN-m.

One of the unique features of this motor is the communication scheme. The motor uses USB Type-C for power and communication (RS232). By using USB Type-C and including an amplifier, controller, and encoder into a compact 38.1mm x 34.4mm form factor, the motor is a favorable rotary positioning solution.
