October 22, 2018 — Festo introduced at Pack Expo, October 14-17, McCormick Place in Chicago, the CPX-E control platform for handling technology. The CPX-E’s handling technology is designed to enable packaging machine OEMs to reduce motion handling design time, speed up assembly, and bring new machines to market faster. Plug-and-pay connectivity includes Festo components and systems such as sensors, cameras, HMI, and electric and pneumatic servo systems, including actuators.
Festo showcased a flow wrapper demonstration where Festo plug-and-play sensors, image processing systems including the SBPB camera, electric servos, and actuators handled 100 percent of the motion functions comprised of CAM control, tension control, temperature control, and printing mark control for the conveyor belt, feeder, foil transport, pusher, sealer, and cutter. A Festo HMI, also plug-and-play, was utilized for recipe and alarm handling.
Festo estimates that with an all servo electric packaging machine utilizing the connectivity of the CPX-E controller and portfolio of electric motion components, it can be a single-source component and custom-assembly supplier for more than 25 percent of a motion handling solution. The CPX-E is suitable for all major PLC and industrial computer master control systems, including those form Rockwell, Siemens, and Beckhoff.
