Laser Design signs QMT as Pacific Northwest distributor

Quality Measurement Technology will distribute Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems throughout the northwestern United States.

November 18, 2008 - Laser Design signed a distribution agreement with Quality Measurement Technology (QMT) in Auburn, WA (Seattle area), to meet increased demand for its Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems throughout the northwestern United States. The QMT distributorship will showcase and demonstrate Laser Design’s portable Surveyor-FA (Faro-arm) scanner and its Surveyor WS-Series high-precision scanning system to area customers. The portable Faro-Arm system is available with an 8” laser line scanner, the industry’s fastest and most accurate scanner for large parts. Laser Design President C. Martin Schuster stated, “The metrologists at QMT have a wealth of experience in performing 3D laser scanning for prominent area companies and suppliers to the aerospace industry.

QMT is an important addition in our strategy for becoming a 3D scanning technology leader in the Seattle area. We are pleased to have QMT represent our products and services, and provide support to our customers." Laser Design’s high-speed, high-accuracy Surveyor 3D scanning systems improve inspection processes as well as support reverse engineering and CAD modeling used for product design and development in many high-tech industries. Tom Demogines, owner of QMT, commented, “QMT provides our customers with premier metrology and reverse engineering equipment, software, and services to give them a competitive edge in today's manufacturing world.

You can depend on us to use the latest coordinate metrology equipment including Laser Design’s high-speed non-contact laser technology to deliver our guarantee of fast and efficient inspection, programming, and reverse engineering services. Having represented some of the most prominent laser scanning companies in the past we have found that Laser Design has the premier product to use with articulated CMMs in addition to fixed CMMs.” Laser scanning systems project laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser as it sweeps along, enabling the object to be accurately replicated digitally.

Laser scanners can quickly measure parts both large and small while generating far greater numbers of data coordinates than touch probes without the need for templates or fixtures. Laser scanning reproduces the complete geometry of a complex part to a high level of accuracy, often to within 1 thousandth of an inch.As a Laser Design distributor, QMT is expanding its role as a total 3D measurement solution provider. To that end, it recently opened a facility in Auburn which more than doubles its previous lab space. A new high-precision Wenzel CMM was installed for large component inspection.

Verification of parts to model-based definition is provided on a contract basis for manufacturers who require first article inspection, capability studies for process control, and/or have a need for measuring parts on a regular basis. Laser Design’s Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems are ideal for the inspection, reverse engineering, and product design and development applications typical for the high-tech and aerospace manufacturing in the Pacific Northwest. The Surveyor Scan Control software which is included in the system automates the process of scanning to gather millions of coordinates and editing the data into a useable format.

Systems also include Geomagic software for generating easy-to-read color error deviation maps that clearly delineate any variations between the as-built part and the design intent. “Laser Design 3D scanning systems increase speed and accuracy, so design and manufacturing costs go down, improving customers’ bottom lines,” continued Demogines. “Our sales and support personnel are excited to bring this advanced technology and its tremendous benefits to local industries.” Laser Design, Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years.

Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design’s Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company’s patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies.

Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications.Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company also has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in Seattle, Charlotte, Toledo and Detroit, and distributors throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services, an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, dimensional inspection services, and terrestrial laser scanning.
