Lenze releases PackML Library

Designed for machine builders and operators, the Lenze library simplifies implementation of PackML standards using ladder logic.

November 20, 2013 – Lenze Americas released a library for encapsulating the mode/state matrix used in PackML to make it configurable directly from a graphic user interface (GUI). Designed for machine builders and operators, the Lenze library greatly simplifies implementation of PackML standards using ladder logic. Adopted under the ANSI/ISA-88 standard, PackML stands for Packaging Machine Language, which defines a common language for automated machinery that helps machine builders and owners collect data and improve machine designs. PackML describes the way a machine works based on function, not by the programming language. The new Lenze programming library supports the goal of PackML by bridging gaps between ladder logic programming and PackML standards.

“Our library facilitates adoption of PackML standards, so customers can deliver safer and more predictable machines that collect data and can be operated and diagnosed without complex development software,” states Tom Jensen, OEM business development manager, Lenze Americas. “It gives machine programmers added freedom to focus on the intellectual property that will differentiate their machines—better motion, diagnostics, data collection, video on HMI, and more.” Residing in the Lenze modular programming environment, the PackML library completes the standard outlined in ISA-88 Part 5 (Make2Pack). The Lenze reference library includes:

  • Mode/state model in ladder programming where the OEM can simply add their code
  • Special function blocks that automate bi-directional (mode-to-mode) transitions in the model
  • GUI to configure the function blocks for mode operation
  • GUI feedback on machine operation as defined by PackML
  • Recipe and alarm structures as defined in PackML using standard components in the PAC

Lenze users import the reference library, which contains seven modes defining states used in PackML. Modes can be expanded or reduced, depending on user requirements. A machine is programmed for modal operation by creating the code in ladder logic—or any IEC61131 language. Final configurations are stored and fed directly to the function block that controls movements between mode programs. “We set out to reduce the time and costs associated with engineering resources previously needed to convert and rewrite ladder code,” adds Jensen.

“By simplifying code requirements for movement through the PackML mode/state matrix, the Lenze library allows copy-and-paste replication of the original code for use by customers in the programming environment of their choosing.”
