Moteiv Introduces New Low Cost Wireless Sensor System

08 February, 2006
Tmote Invent™ consists of hardware and software components that allow customers to quickly and easily build and install custom wireless sensing applications at a much lower cost than previously available.

San Francisco, California — February 8, 2006 – Moteiv Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wireless sensor networks, today announced the introduction of Tmote Invent™, its newest low-cost wireless sensor system. The system consists of hardware and software components that combined allow customers to quickly and easily build and install custom wireless sensing applications at a much lower cost than previously available. The hardware component combines the company’s Tmote Sky™ sensor module for communication and computation with a rechargeable battery, an integrated suite of sensors, a microphone and a speaker all packaged into an innovative case. The system’s software component is Moteiv's robust distribution of the open-source TinyOS operating system.

Moteiv’s unique enhancements to TinyOS yield long-lived reliable applications through integration of cutting-edge open-source technology with robust, manageable wireless technology from Moteiv. “Tmote Invent with its sleek design, high functionality, low cost, and robust software will allow customers to build powerful sensing applications much faster than current solutions, which will decrease our customers’ overall time-to-market,” said Joe Polastre, chief executive officer for Moteiv Corporation. Tmote Invent is a complete innovative wireless sensor hardware and software package designed for industrial and environmental applications including building monitoring and security control.

The package includes the company’s recently FCC certified Tmote Sky™ sensing module with an integrated suite of common sensors, including light, temperature, sound, and acceleration, all packaged in a stylized plastic case. The innovative sensing package introduces a new level in ease of use to reduce the customer’s overall development time. The software component of the system, which runs on Moteiv’s Tmote Sky and Tmote Invent devices, is strenuously tested to yield long-lived reliable applications. Built on the open-source TinyOS operating system, Moteiv’s robust software distribution gives customers a more reliable and predicable solution than found in other open-source wireless solutions.

Together, the two core components of the Tmote Invent system allow customers to quickly build and deploy custom wireless sensing applications. The new system is currently available and will be demonstrated at the 3rd annual TinyOS Technology Exchange at Stanford, CA on February 10, 2006. Founded in 2003, Moteiv Corporation is a leading wireless sensor network provider specializing in easy-to-use hardware and software solutions. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, its products are designed for applications such as microclimate monitoring, tracking, security and industrial sensing and control, which require networks to function independently for long periods of time using very little power and in potentially harsh environments.
