April 18, 2022 - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published a new white paper, Clarification of Broad Voltage vs. “Useable at” Voltage NEMA IS 10007-2022. This paper explains the difference between three-phase motors rated as 208-230/460 V or 230/460 V and marked “useable at 208 V.” It also explains how these ratings relate to the U.S.

Department of Energy motor efficiency regulation compliance. Dale Basso, chair of the NEMA Motors and Generators Section, said, “This document helps motor users understand the difference between the broad voltage and “useable at” voltage ratings that are relevant to nameplate voltage rating markings for medium three-phase motors.” He added, “Understanding these ratings can assist in complying with federal energy efficiency regulations.” This paper was written for the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, water/wastewater, air movement/fans and appliance industries, as well as federal regulators. NEMA IS 10007-2022 is available on the NEMA website as an electronic download for no cost.
