Companies form technology alliance to help shape the future of substation automation.

February 9, 2016 - Moxa joined in a formal technology partnership with SUBNET Solutions to help shape the future of automation in electrical substations. As a first step in this partnership the two companies are presenting a joint demonstration of SUBNET's substation software running on Moxa computers.

The demonstration features the Moxa DA-820, a native PRP/HSR computer engineered to adhere to IEC 61850-3 standards for electrical substation automation. To highlight the responsiveness of SUBNET's SubSTATION Server and SubSTATION Explorer software packages on different hardware platforms, the demonstration features a redundant system with a primary and a secondary server, one of which is powered by the DA-820. It will illustrate how running the software on Moxa computers will save time and money for utilities by eliminating the need to purchase, configure and maintain multiple different legacy integration devices.

SUBNET's decision to partner with Moxa was based on the quality of the Moxa hardware and a growing industry trend towards virtual machines, according to Anthony Eshpeter, Chief Technology Officer for SUBNET: "We were impressed that the DA-820 has built-in PRP and HSR capability, making it the first computer to offer this capability to the substation market. The DA-820 also allows our customers to leverage virtual machines through its incredible processing speed. We've found Moxa's engineering capabilities, global reach, and wide selection of other products outside computers are second to none when it comes to simplifying a substation's communications infrastructure. As a result of this new partnership we can develop more tailored solutions to address the needs of global customers."

Eddie Lee, Director of Global Industry Marketing for Moxa added: "Many of our utility customers need the advanced software and services SUBNET provides along with a ruggedized computer platform designed for challenging substation environments. Partnering with SUBNET makes it possible for customers to utilize industry-leading software and hardware expertise without worrying about compatibility or support issues."
