Objective Interface supplies ORBexpress RT to NASA

NASA will use ORBexpress RT in a research project to develop a software architecture solution for NASA’s next-generation software defined radios.

London, UK — June 11, 2007 — Objective Interface Systems announced that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center has selected its high-performance real-time communications middleware, ORBexpress RT, to research the viability and optimization options for a light-weight Software Communication Architecture (SCA) as a potential software architecture solution for NASA’s next-generation SDRs. With the most rigorous requirements for size, weight and power (SWAP)—factors critical to space-based advanced radio communications—NASA selected ORBexpress RT, a small-footprint product that optimizes the use of scarce resources.

“Whether on a satellite, a shuttle or a space station, NASA faces the most demanding known requirements for SWAP,” said Joe Jacob, senior vice president of Objective Interface. “ORBexpress RT combines high performance with low latency and low overhead, which are important for small, light-weight, low-power radios.” Mr. Jacob added: “We are extremely pleased that NASA has selected ORBexpress RT for a project with so much potential significance to their radio communications program.” A Department of Defense standard for the next generation of software defined radios, the SCA provides several benefits.

Among them are software re-use; common hardware and software platforms to reduce production costs; and field upgradeability. SCA-based SDRs use Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) for the design and deployment of their radio application. ORBexpress RT is a real-time CORBA object request broker (ORB). Mr Jacob elaborated “As real-time communications middleware, ORBexpress RT goes beyond fulfilling the CORBA requirement of the SCA.

It provides a secure and safe high-performance framework for the various software modules that define a software defined radio’s behavior, ensuring predictability of behavior and reliability.”

Held June 11-12 at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in London, International Software Radio 2007 will address current and future military requirements in providing software-based wireless systems and devices for effective communications within and between units and forces. On June 11, Joe Jacob, senior vice president of Objective Interface, will present “Developing Highly Secure Radios Using CORBA Across Devices.” During this tutorial, Mr. Jacob will address the need for a high-assurance architecture for SDR. He will also explore how to use CORBA across general purpose processors (GPPs), digital signal processors (DSPs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
