Premo's RFID tags work on metal surfaces

25 March, 2009
PREMOTAG works in the HF RFID band (13.56MHz), for use on metal surfaces and environments where high resistance is needed.

March 25, 2009 - PREMOTAG provides a reliable and high performance solution in HF band radio frequency identification field (13.56MHz) specially designed to work on metal surfaces and environments where high resistance is needed.A RFID standard inlay (label with air core coil) does not work fine when it is attached to a metallic surface due to Eddy current. The effect is that very high losses shortcut the magnetic field; making the inlay useless to control or tracking this kind of devices. Premotag solves this problem by using an inside antenna (ferrite core) which makes all magnetic field lines pass through it and avoiding negative effects.

Therefore the PREMOTAG has a good performance even on metallic surfaces.

The tag provides a plastic enclosure PA66 (UL94 V-0, flame-resistant) completely sealed by polyurethane resin which gives the device a protection degree of IP68 suitable fot outdoor and industrial environment. Its small size (33.3 x 14.6 x 9 mm), lower than standard RFID labels in the market, is achieved due to its special ferrite material with 13.56 MHz frequency operation.

The ferrite antenna is connected to I-code NXP chip of 1Kbit memory (reader/writer) and ISO15693 protocol with anticollision. Others chips available under demand.

The PREMOTAG is available in two versions depending on assembly method:

  • Screw, small rivets and double side adhesive tape.
  • SMD version.Reading distances on non-metallic surfaces are 20cm and 11-15cm over metal surfaces (1W power); for higher powers (4W) the PREMOTAG reaches 50cm on non-metallic surfaces and the 25-30cm reading distances on metal surfaces, depending also of transmitting antenna size.
