Rack-mounted Programmable Automation Controller

05 June, 2006
Extending the company's long history of reliable, easy-to-use automation and control hardware, the SNAP-PAC-R2 is the third PAC controller Opto 22 has released in the last six months. It follows in the footsteps of the SNAP-PAC-S1, the SNAP-PAC-R1, and the acknowledged forerunner of the PAC, the mistic™ controller, first introduced in 1991.

New SNAP-PAC-R2 Programmable Automation Controller Supports Additional I/O ConfigurationsTemecula, CA — June 6, 2006 — Opto 22, a developer and manufacturer of hardware and software for industrial automation, remote monitoring, data acquisition, and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, has announced the release of the SNAP-PAC-R2, the latest in the company's line of powerful and versatile programmable automation controllers. Extending the company's long history of reliable, easy-to-use automation and control hardware, the SNAP-PAC-R2 is the third PAC controller Opto 22 has released in the last six months.

It follows in the footsteps of the SNAP-PAC-S1, the SNAP-PAC-R1, and the acknowledged forerunner of the PAC, the mistic™ controller, first introduced in 1991.The SNAP PAC R-series PACs are “on-the-I/O-rack” controllers ideal for cell control, data acquisition, and remote monitoring applications where the I/O needs are geographically contained. The new SNAP-PAC-R2 version supports up to 512 points of SNAP analog, digital, and serial I/O modules, providing more flexibility than its predecessor, the SNAP-PAC-R1. In addition to I/O processing, the SNAP-PAC-R2 offers powerful control capabilities, including PID loop control, floating point math, string handling, and dual Ethernet communications with serial PPP for remote monitoring applications.

The SNAP-PAC-R2 includes two independent, auto-negotiating 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces, which can be used for network segmenting or Ethernet link redundancy; a 32-bit multitasking processor with floating point unit; 16 MB of RAM, 8 MB of flash memory, and 2 MB of battery-backed RAM; and one RS-232 port with hardware handshaking control.

The SNAP-PAC-R2 is designed for use with Opto's ioProject™ software. ioProject is an integrated suite of programming and HMI development applications, tools, and utilities used to design, configure, debug, and maintain industrial control, monitoring, and data acquisition applications.ioProject includes ioControl, a flowchart-based programming and debugging application with an extensive, plain-English command set, as well as a powerful scripting language. ioControl provides commands for analog and digital control, advanced math, conditional branching, string handling, serial device control, subroutines, PID loop control, data arrays, and other complex functions.ioProject also includes ioDisplay, a feature-rich, human-machine interface (HMI) application used to design and run operator interfaces on Microsoft Windows-based clients.

Using ioDisplay, users can create graphical user interfaces using original or included symbols, plus jpeg and bitmap graphics. Support for alarm management, recipe handling, operator logging, real-time and historical trending, multimedia, and unlimited tags places ioDisplay on par with competitive applications, such as Invensys’ Wonderware InTouch and General Electric's Intellution iFix— that cost thousands of dollars more. The entire ioProject Basic suite is included free of charge with purchase of the SNAP-PAC-R2 and most other Opto 22 SNAP Ethernet controllers. The SNAP-PAC-R2 programmable automation controller is now available, and suggested list pricing is $865 USD.
