SICK will provide Ruler E 3D cameras as part of continuing improvements to the United States Postal Service’s Automated Package Processing System (APPS).

May 12, 2009 – SICK was awarded a multi-million dollar order from Lockheed Martin Systems Integration – Owego to provide its Ruler E 3D Cameras as part of continuing improvements to the United States Postal Service’s Automated Package Processing System (APPS). Lockheed will install the solution at APPS sites across the country in 2009. The Ruler E 3D Camera, along with SICK’s software program, will be used to enhance the sorting accuracy of the APPS. The 3D camera determines double packages, package position, and package dimensions / orientation. This innovation enables the APPS Sorter to more accurately process the diverse mailstream of the USPS, improving quality of service.

The singulation verification and object detection solution can be used in a variety of fields, such as the courier, express and parcel delivery business or in the retail industry. The Ruler E Camera from SICK has built-in laser and optics for a predefined field of view, making it easy to integrate.
