Siemens has pledged €2.4 million to support cutting-edge research on the industrial metaverse at the Technical University of Munich’s Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS). Through six Hans Fischer Fellowships, international experts will collaborate with TUM professors to develop the digital world of the industrial metaverse. The research will focus on areas including digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics and computer simulation. The Hans Fischer Fellowships will connect international scientific expertise with the TUM’s School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT), the Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI) and the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI).

Their research will be centered around token economics, web3 architecture, digital twin, autonomous systems and trustworthy artificial intelligence.

What is the industrial metaverse?

Together with numerous partners from various industries and academic institutions, Siemens is working to enable the industrial metaverse. This digital world will be the result of the continuous advancement and integration of technologies such as digital twins, artificial intelligence, edge and cloud computing. In the industrial metaverse, real machines, factories, buildings, cities, grids and transportation systems will be mirrored and simulated–and all these digital twins will be connected to each other and their physical counterparts. This move will allow seamless interactions between people and machines from any location and enable almost everyone to become a virtual inventor.

It will break down barriers of space and time, foster innovation, optimize business operations and promote resource efficiency and decarbonization; a digital world to solve real-world problems.
