Video describes Honeywell SMART Position Sensor

June 8, 2009 - To better inform engineers of the advantages of using its SMART Position Sensor, Honeywell added a streaming video demonstration of these new sensors to its Web site. The video highlights the sensor's ability to improve safety, operational efficiency, reliability, and durability, and reduce total cost of ownership. "Our customers have been asking for streaming content to help them learn more about our products," said Dr. Larry Goldstein, chief technology officer of Honeywell Sensing and Control. "On the video I explain the key characteristics and capabilities of these new sensor devices - one engineer to another.

The response we have received has shown the value of this approach." The six-and-a-half-minute video allows engineers worldwide to see how the SMART Position Sensor works and the technology behind it, including the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), magnetoresistive (MR) bridges, CAN bus circuit, printed circuit board assembly, and built-in redundancy.

About Honeywell's SMART Position Sensor

Scheduled to be introduced in late 2009, Honeywell's SMART Position Sensor can essentially think for itself. It has the ability to self-calibrate because it uses a patented combination of an ASIC and an array of MR sensors to determine the position of a magnet attached to a moving object. This enhances the accuracy and reliability of the calculation of positioning information in a variety of aerospace, industrial, medical, and transportation applications. The sensor is available in three configurations: linear (senses the position of a magnet relative to the sensor from 0 to 200 mm), arc (0 to 100°), and rotary (0° to 360°).
