Siemens has released a new distributed I/O system for cabinet-free, IP65/67 installations. The SIMATIC ET 200pro is from the ET 200 product family and continues to build on the Siemens modular I/O assembly concept. The ET 200pro has bus interface modules that allow the user to connect to PROFIBUS, PROFINET, PROFISAFE and DeviceNet (end of 2005). Power and the network bus can be connected directly using screw-type cable glands, standard M12 / 7/8 connectors or via an ECOFAST connector which includes both bus and power in one cable and connector. The ET 200pro is easy to assemble with just two screws needed for each I/O module. Each module consists of three parts: the communication bus for backplane communications; the I/O electronics, which distinguish what type of I/O the module is; and the connection module, which allows the user to connect their external devices. Each module features diagnostics to aid in commissioning and fault tracing for the module and individual channels. Each I/O module can also be replaced during operation without the requirement of shutting down the whole system. The ET 200pro offers a wide range of I/O modules including standard digital I/O (4 or 8 points), various analog modules (4 points) and various specialty modules for motor starters, frequency converters, pneumatic modules, RFID modules, and fail-safe modules. The Siemens ET 200pro I/O system is the first in the world to offer IP65/67 protection with safety-relevant Industrial Ethernet using PROFISAFE. The interface module offers a built-in 2-port Ethernet switch to allow simpler infrastructure configurations for applications like conveying systems. Using PROFISAFE and the ET 200pro solves automation applications that require safety requirements up to SIL 3 (EN61508) or Category 4 (EN 954-1). Fail-safe input and output modules allow actuators and sensors to be connected to the system. Standard as well as fail-safe I/O modules can be combined in one system to offer greater application flexibility.
