LAS VEGAS, N.V., Sept. 5, 2025 – Mobile traffic trailers and stationary roadside installations are two examples of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that leverage solar power to supply DC voltage to on-board devices, such as IP cameras, loudspeakers and digital displays. Since these applications are remote, Power over Ethernet (PoE) provided via a local Ethernet switch would be the best option. PoE combines electrical power and network data transmission over a single Ethernet cable, simplifying installations by eliminating the need for separate power outlets and adapters.
Here's the catch: PoE-enabled Ethernet switches operate using a DC voltage range of 44-57V, with a nominal target of 48VDC, according to IEEE PoE 802.3 standards. This is well beyond solar's typical 12VDC or 24VDC. Without enough voltage a PoE-enabled Ethernet switch cannot safely deliver both power and data over a cable. For instance, an IP camera without sufficient PoE voltage will exhibit symptoms ranging from minor glitches to complete failure.
To address this problem, Antaira has added to its robust portfolio of network solutions to include the LNP-0500G-24-T 5-port Gigabit PoE+ unmanaged switch. Unlike standard switches, the LNP-0500G-24-T has an internal DC-to-DC power boost function that takes low-voltage input (12~36VDC) and amplifies it to 48VDC. The booster enables network connectivity and 30W PoE 802.3at/af power to be delivered to connected devices through four of the switch's five Gigabit ports. Additionally, an external power supply option is available to connect to wall power.
Compared to commercial switch models, the LNP-0500G-24-T is an industrial-grade solution with a significantly more robust architecture. An IP30 metal housing protects internal electronics in extended operating temperatures from -40° to 75°C, while the UL Class I, Division 2 Certification qualifies it for use in hazardous locations. It also offers the safety of 2000 VCD surge protection, a built-in relay output for power failure warnings, and ESD protection of up to 6000 VDC. Despite this rugged industrial design, it features a compact footprint and is DIN-rail mountable, making it simple to install in confined spaces.
The innovative LNP-0500G-24-T introduces a range of key features designed to enhance networking capabilities, combining the plug-and-play simplicity of an unmanaged switch with 10Gbps back plane and 9.6Kbytes jumbo frame support.
