Small-footprint industrial computer with XPe will make programming jobs easier

Cincinnati, Ohio (March 10, 2005) – Advantech Corporation, Industrial Automation Group is pleased to announce that many UNO products now come with an option that supports Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded. Windows XP Embedded offers a pre-configured image for faster development of reliable, full-featured and connected industrial control systems. Support for standard hardware and software makes development for Windows XP Embedded easier, more robust, and less expensive.Windows XP Embedded is a componentized version of Windows XP Professional. This, of course, is much smaller than a typical install of Windows XP Professional, but utilizes the same application programming environment.

Windows XP Embedded can therefore be installed on a 1 GB, built-in, industrial-grade CompactFlash® card, which is now optional with many UNO models. The CompactFlash card provides enough space for Windows XP Embedded, system applications and data backup. It also ensures reliable storage with its resistance to vibration and shock, and can be easily replaced for fast system upgrades. Together with a design that has eliminated the need for a fan, UNO has what it takes to create a long-term industrial controller solution.Windows XP Embedded makes it quick and easy for programmers to develop applications, and it’s now possible to target both desktop and embedded devices with a single application.

Windows XP Embedded is truly making inroads in the embedded industrial computing market. Windows XP Embedded offers a preemptive multitasking architecture, a fully protected memory model, improved code protection for critical kernel structures, file protection and more. There is also support for integrated communications and networking with broadband networks, 802.11b, TCP/IP, RAS, DHCP client and many more. The similarity with the Windows interface also makes it easier to use.

The UNO series is highly rugged and robust, and suitable for use in critical and harsh environments. It has a strong mechanical and fanless design, flexible mounting options, and also offers excellent anti-vibration and anti-shock properties. It can endure high-operating temperatures and almost anything an industrial environment can demand.By offering UNO with a standard embedded operating system, an easier and more cost-effective solution is available for both programmers and users of industrial applications.

Windows XP Embedded will be available for all UNO products from February 2005.UNO Series products are available for purchase directly from Advantech or from one of Advantech’s North American distributors at www.eAutomationPro.com .For more information or to locate an Advantech distributor, visit www.eAutomationPro.com .
