Stepwise migration to DeltaV™ system enables fast and cost effective use of digital technology, including predictive control
Austin, Texas (September 15, 2004) — Emerson Process Management announced today that Degussa Peroxide's Morrinsville, New Zealand, plant has transitioned a key part of its legacy control system application to Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with the DeltaV™ digital automation system. Until recently, the entire plant was operating under the control of the legacy Honeywell TDC 3000 control system that was installed in the 1990s. During the past several years, higher maintenance costs, availability of affordable support, and higher cost to keep the system current provided an impetus for implementing a change — to reduce the total cost of ownership.
Adding to cost reduction factors, management at the Morrinsville plant was eager to gain the benefits of advanced digital technologies such as multivariable predictive control embedded in the DeltaV system. "Emerson's DeltaV Predict was cost effective for multi-variable model predictive control on our concentrator, enabling us to simultaneously reduce costs and improve quality," said Arnold Yeoman, operations manager at Degussa. "Emerson's stepwise solutions for migrating to the DeltaV system, including the DeltaV serial interface for Honeywell systems, provided us the opportunity to gain benefits from state-of-the-art digital technologies like predictive control to improve our bottom line.""

Migration solutions provide flexibility and deliver efficiency Emerson's migration products for field connections, operator interface, and control, combined with its simulation, training, and conversion services, reduce installation costs and minimize downtime during an automation system upgrade.Using the serial interface, plant operators have access to the legacy control system data via DeltaV operator consoles. Emerson can reduce rewiring costs as much as 50 percent and process downtime by 75 percent by utilizing migration products such as FlexConnect. Emerson's migration services include database conversion and graphics conversion or complete redesign of displays. Simulation tools expedite checkout and reduce the learning curve for operator training.
