Emerson will optimize operations and enable predictive maintenance for improved performance of AES Tisza Power Plant

AUSTIN, TX. (April 24, 2003) - Emerson Process Management, an Emerson business (NYSE:EMR), announced today that it has been awarded a $7.2 million contract to modernize AES Tisza Power Plant in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary, near Budapest. Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture will anchor automation and predictive maintenance techniques designed to improve the power plant's efficiency, reliability and overall performance. AES, the third-largest power producer in Hungary, is modernizing the Tisza plant in order to assure future generation capacity.

The upgrade will allow the plant to meet the terms of its power purchase agreement with the Hungarian electric utility, Magyar Villamos Muvek Rt. and comply with European Union environmental directives. Emerson's DeltaVTM digital automation system, one component of the PlantWeb architecture, will control four 215-megawatt natural gas and oil fired units. The contract also includes installation of HART field devices, AMS predictive maintenance software and SmartProcess® Optimization Software. Led by its Power & Water Solutions Industry Center, Emerson's European offices will install and engineer the project with the first unit scheduled for completion in December 2003, and the remaining three units to be completed in succession by December 2004.

"AES chose Emerson based on its proven power industry expertise and extensive experience engineering control systems for plants fired by a variety of fossil fuels," said Al Dyer, managing director of AES-Tisza Eromu Kft. "We selected Emerson from a field of potential partners. One important element of our decision was the positive experiences with the Hungarian organization of Emerson Process Management." "Working with AES on the Tisza project is a special opportunity to build on our already strong presence within the European power industry," said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management.

"We are pleased that AES took account of our experience and successes from projects around the world, as well as our ability to easily integrate the scope of Emerson products for complete, forward-looking solutions. We're committed to meeting the AES goals." PlantWeb architecture combines intelligent, digital field devices, digital automation systems, and modular software that enables plants to automate processes, optimize assets, and deliver management information. PlantWeb offers AES the opportunity to significantly reduce maintenance costs while improving overall operating performance at the Tisza facility by allowing operators to diagnose and adjust more than 600 valves and instruments in the plant before costly problems can occur.

The DeltaV system, communicating through HART field devices, will use Emerson's AMS predictive maintenance software to provide accurate, real-time equipment information to plant personnel for more efficient, time-sensitive and cost-effective maintenance operations. Emerson intelligent field devices used at Tisza will include Rosemount® pressure, flow, and temperature instruments; Fisher® control valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers; Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters; and Rosemount analyzers. Additionally, Emerson will optimize operations at Tisza with SmartProcess® Optimization Software. Using the SmartProcess Global Performance Advisor module, Tisza operators will be able to continuously monitor major equipment performance and compare it to expected performance criteria.

Customized to specific equipment and processes, the module will track unit heat rate over time and indicate dollars lost due to performance deviations from equipment design, enabling action to reduce operating costs.
