Technology migration plan for Austrian refinery identifies high payout investment opportunities
AUSTIN, TX (July 22, 2004) — OMV Aktiengesellschaft recently completed a project with Emerson Process Management to develop a detailed plan for future technology migration at their Schwechat refinery, located in Vienna, Austria. The Schwechat refinery, one of the largest inland refineries in Europe, processes nine million metric tons of crude oil per year. The refinery commenced production in 1960 and has since then been continuously modernized, successfully implementing many advanced control and online optimization systems on their process units and product blending facilities. Significant changes in technology and limited capital funds made it important to develop detailed plans for future technology migration and new projects in this area.
The Advanced Applied Technology Group of Emerson implemented the study that included the advanced application infrastructure, advanced control applications, online modeling and optimization, and some production management functions. A particular focus of the study was the net financial return expected from existing and new applications. "The extensive study completed by Emerson has provided us with an investment program that clearly identifies priorities and high payout investment opportunities," said Gerhard Warecka of OMV, Head of Department Optimization, Schwechat Refinery.

In addition to the transmitters, we also have over 8000 Fisher® control valves installed on site, as well as Saab Rosemount radar level gauges on their tank farm. We are looking forward to working with OMV to increase output by improving quality and throughput with improved process control and by improving availability with proper equipment installation, detection and monitoring."
