Company to assist The Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY with $85 million expansion project
(St.
Louis, MO: July 02, 2003) FKI Logistex® (LSE: FKI.L) Alvey Systems (www.alvey.com), an FKI Logistex member company and leading integrator of automated material flow solutions, today announced that it has signed a contract with The Courier-Journal (www.courier-journal.com) newspaper of Louisville, KY to provide key components of the material handling system in its new manufacturing plant.Included in the equipment Alvey Systems has been selected to provide for the 135,000 square foot facility — presently under construction in downtown Louisville — is an advanced bundle sortation and distribution system.
The project also features 10 newspaper tie-lines and conveyors, in addition to merging and sortation equipment that move and route newspapers through the plant. Ten inputs will sort and distribute bundled newspapers to five cart-loader output stations and four bulk-loading output stations. The system's maximum capacity is 132 bundles per minute, with each bundle containing 35 to 40 newspapers. The Courier-Journal newspaper traces its roots back to 1868, when two long-standing publications, The Louisville Journal and The Courier, merged to form The Courier-Journal under editor Henry Watterson.
In 1986, the paper was purchased by Gannett Company, Inc., the largest distributor of newspapers in the United States.
Gannett's 100 daily newspapers in the US have a combined paid circulation of 7.7 million that includes USA TODAY, whose own circulation of approximately 2.3 million makes it the nation's largest-selling daily newspaper.Groundbreaking for the new $85 million Louisville facility took place in October 2002 as part of an ambitious expansion campaign that represented the largest capital project in downtown Louisville in several years.
When completed, the new plant will feature state-of-the-art printing presses able to print 75,000 newspapers per hour." Alvey is honored by the opportunity to help modernize The Courier-Journal's operations as it proudly continues to serve the greater Louisville community" said Steve Ackerman, Alvey Systems president. For sales information, please contact Kevin Kozuszek, marketing communications manager for Alvey Systems, by phone at (314) 993-4700 or via e-mail at [email protected] .
