Haydon Switch & Instrument Introduces Anti-Backlash Nut for Linear Actuators

24 March, 2006

Designed to optimize system stiffness without sacrificing life or increasing drag torque, these nuts can be used in conjunction with HSI's existing line of linear actuators or as a standalone product along with HSI's extensive selection of Acme lead screws. HSI has developed a patent pending method of preloading the threaded nut halves to provide a system that maximizes system stiffness while reducing drag torque.

Haydon Switch & Instrument, Inc., (HSI), Waterbury, CT - Drawing on their 25+ years of experience with linear motion systems, they have developed a new series of anti-backlash nuts. Designed to optimize system stiffness without sacrificing life or increasing drag torque, these nuts can be used in conjunction with HSI’s existing line of linear actuators or as a standalone product along with HSI’s extensive selection of Acme lead screws. The “W” series anti-backlash nuts are designed to provide many years of service without a degrade in performance. HSI has developed a unique, patent pending method of preloading the threaded nut haves to provide a system that maximizes system stiffness while reducing drag torque.

The nut design compensates for wear while eliminating lock-up issues common when traversing from worn areas to unworn areas of the screw. Utilizing a proprietary blend of self lubricating polyacetal in conjunction with our precision rolled 303 stainless steel screw material this nut provides low drag torque and smooth operation throughout the life of the assembly. Designed to provide maximum life with one-time lubrication, this nut also performs exceptionally when run dry in conjuction with HSI’s Black Ice ™ coated screws.

Black Ice is an HSI trademarked PTFE coating process that eliminates the flaking that commonly occurs with other PTFE coatings. These new anti-backlash nuts are ideally suited for applications that require precise positioning as they eliminate the minimal backlash between the leadscrew and nut interface. They are available in a wide range of diameters and leads.
