ISA/IEC 62443 turns uncertainty into a navigable journey.

A lighthouse doesn’t control a ship’s wheel or dictate its exact route, but it provides a fixed, trusted point of reference that helps captains orient themselves and avoid danger. In uncertain waters, that steady beam reduces guesswork and prevents constant second guessing among the crew. It brings clarity and alignment, allowing the ship to move forward confidently without debating where the hazards might be.

The same can be said for guiding principles, standards and best practices such as ISA/IEC 62443, a globally recognized series of cybersecurity standards for industrial automation and control systems (IACS).

One reason we see ISA/IEC 62443 as so valuable for our customers is that it’s not “one rulebook.” It’s a chart room: a structured set of references that helps different roles — operators, integrators and product suppliers — navigate the same waters using a shared map.

Think of the series like seamanship training and ship operations, organized in four practical layers:

Part 1 (General): Learn the language of the sea.

Before anyone can sail together, they must agree on basics: port and starboard, bow and stern, knots and nautical miles. In ISA/IEC 62443, the “General” parts establish common terminology and foundational concepts so teams stop arguing over definitions and can focus on decisions.

Part 2 (Policies & Procedures): How to run the ship, especially in rough weather.

A capable crew doesn’t invent procedures mid storm. They train, assign responsibilities, maintain logs and practice drills. ISA/IEC 62443’s program requirements provide that operational discipline: establishing and maintaining an IACS security program, expectations for service providers and practical guidance like patch management. This is where cybersecurity becomes repeatable, not heroic.

Part 3 (System): Plot the route and design the voyage.

Even the best crew needs a plan: charts, hazard identification and a route that accounts for conditions. At the system layer, ISA/IEC 62443 focuses on assessing risk for system design and defining system security requirements and “security levels.” In sailing terms, it’s choosing safe passages, setting watch schedules and building defense in depth into how the ship operates, not bolting on a life jacket after leaving port.

Part 4 (Component): Build seaworthy vessels and trustworthy parts.

A voyage depends on the integrity of each component: hull, rigging, compass, radio. ISA/IEC 62443 addresses secure product development practices and technical requirements for components, helping ensure that the building blocks of industrial systems are engineered to withstand real conditions.

For our customers and partners here at Nozomi Networks, the value is simple: ISA/IEC 62443 turns uncertainty into a navigable journey. It aligns stakeholders on a common reference point, like a lighthouse, so teams can move faster, reduce risk and build resilience without debating the fundamentals every time the seas get rough.
