The ETHERNET Powerlink (EPL) EVM Board from IXXAT enables developers of automation components to gain initial experience with EPL systems. It consists of a piggyback module which is equipped with an Altera Cyclone FPGA, an external SRAM and FLASH and 2 Ethernet slots and a carrier board, which provides the power supply, digital I/O and some display LEDs. The FPGA contains an NIOS II processor core, a standard Ethernet controller and a 2-port hub. On the NIOS II processor core, it is possible to create either a managing node (EPL master) or a controlled node (EPL slave) application.
The already ported EPL protocol software together with a CANopen profile for I/O devices (DS401) which is adapted to the carrier board, is also included in the delivery and can be for further analysis purposes in the Altera IDE.In addition to analysis of EPL, it is also possible to use the EVM as a communication plug-in board in automation components, which is particularly useful for small series or prototype construction. Reference circuit diagrams are provided for later direct integration in customers’ designs.
