January 6, 2011 - Lanner Electronics announced the FW-8770, its first network security appliance to support the 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family, formerly codenamed “Sandy Bridge.” The FW-8770 delivers a host of new features in a network appliance including generation 3 bypass, IPMI and amazing port density for a 1U appliance. The 2nd Generation Intel Core processors support 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology. The FW-8770 comes with a LGA 1155 socket and is compatible with the dual-core Intel Core i3-2120 processor at 65 watts and the quad-core Intel Corei7-2600 and Corei5-2400 processors at 95 watts. The breadth of the FW-8770 network ability is the key to being a next generation platform.
The 1U platform features up to 16 GbE LAN ports- 8 of which are onboard and another 8 which can be added via a Lanner Ethernet module. The 8 onboard ports offer 4 pairs of Generation 3 bypass, which is able to pass network signals even when the platform is being powered on. This appliance has 4x 240 pin DIMM slots which allow for up to 16GB of memory.
It has room for 1 x 3.5” Hard Disk Drive or 2 x 2.5” hard drives. There is an onboard CompactFlash (Type II) socket and features expansion via 1 x PCIe (x8) slot or 2 x PCIe (x4) slot.
Additional features include an RJ-45 Console port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, watchdog, LCM module and a real time clock. “The Intel Q67 Express chipset allows for quicker packet throughput while using less energy,” said Terence Chou- Lanner’s Network Appliance Vice President. “When coupled with the 2nd Generation Intel Core processors, the chipset allows the FW-8770 to be our first mainstream appliance with 16 GbE LAN ports.
The Intel processors also have new Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and power sharing enhancements which helps our appliance to have increased performance by dynamically scaling frequency while reducing power consumption.” “The 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family utilizes a new microarchitecture that delivers significant improvements in performance, platform security and manageability, while still maintaining the extended lifecycle support our embedded customers have grown to depend on,” said Matt Langman, director of product marketing, Intel Embedded Computing Division.
