RuggedCom introduces modular 16-Port Serial Device Server

By: RuggedCom, Inc.
13 October, 2006
The RS416 is an industrially hardened, modular 16 port serial device server with an integrated managed 4 port Ethernet switch, that can be used to aggregate many serial devices for Ethernet network connectivity. The RS416 operates in electrically harsh and climatically demanding environments like those found in electric utility substations, intelligent transportation systems, and industrial process control applications.
  • Modular design – 4, 8, 12 or 16 serial ports (RS485/RS422/RS232)
  • 2 or 4 Ethernet ports (copper and/or fiber)
  • Transmit serial data over an IP network
  • “Network enable” legacy serial devices
  • Supports Modbus, DNP and other serial protocols Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada, October 13, 2006 – RuggedCom announced the release of the RuggedServer™ RS416.

The RS416 is an industrially hardened, modular 16 port serial device server with an integrated fully managed 4 port Ethernet switch, that can be used to aggregate many serial devices for Ethernet network connectivity.

The RS416 is designed to operate reliably in electrically harsh and climatically demanding environments like those found in electric utility substations, intelligent transportation systems, and many industrial process control applications.

“As more automation projects utilize Ethernet based communications to enable operational efficiencies and new capabilities, there is a large installed base of legacy serial devices,” explains Roger Moore, VP of Engineering for RuggedCom.

“The RS416 allows our customers to leverage their existing automation investment as they migrate to a full IP based communications network.

This represents a tremendous capital cost savings without sacrificing the benefits of Ethernet connectivity.”

The RS416 can be configured with 4, 8, 12, or 16 software selectable RS232/RS422/RS485 serial ports with DB9 or RJ45 connectors.

Also, up to 4 copper and/or fiber Ethernet ports can be configured with many flavors of fiber types and connectors available (multimode, singlemode, SC, ST, MTRJ, LC).

The RS416 also has native support for many serial protocols including Modbus and DNP.

The number of options and overall flexibility of the RS416 is unsurpassed in the industry.

As with all RuggedCom products, the RS416 is RuggedRated to provide a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference and heavy electrical surges typical of environments found in electric utility substations, factory floors or in curb side traffic control cabinets.

The RS416 meets or exceeds a wide range of industry standards including IEC61850, IEEE1613 Class 2, IEC61000-6-2, IEEE61800-3, and NEMA TS-2; features a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C (no fans); and can be powered from a variety of sources (12VDC, 24VDC, 48VDC,88-300VDC/35-264VAC), all allowing for great installation flexibility.

The RS416 also features the industry leading embedded Rugged Operating System (ROS) which provides advanced layer 2 and layer 3 networking functions, advanced cyber security features, and a full array of intelligent functionality for high network availability and manageability.

Coupled with the ruggedized hardware design, the RS416 is ideal for creating mission-critical, real-time, control applications in any harsh environment.
